As the Snake Jumps

We went to look at a piece of land for some friends this weekend, and surprised a cottonmouth as we made our way through the heavily wooded area. It was sunning itself beside a pond, and it was so startled when we unexpectedly came around the bend that it actually jumped. Then it slid hurriedly into the pond, and I got this great picture of it swimming away, with the clouds reflected in the water.

  1. I am SO glad we don't have those around here, or at least I don't think we do! I actually like and am fascinated by most snakes, definitely prefer the non-poisonous kind though! Hearing the word cottonmouth and seeing it gliding through the water like that in your picture just puts that horrible scene from Lonesome Dove in my mind! (Shudder)Agh!

Thanks for commenting on my blog! How funny that our goats prefer their blue buckets over the red one and yours is just the opposite! Too bad you live so far away we could trade and then both of our goats would be happy with their preferred color of water bucket. hehe

  2. You do have a lot of snake encounters! Although my cat Fred just brought me one. Happily we could save it. we weren't sure what it was.

  3. What a great picture! It looks like you have as many encounter with snakes as I do.

They are pretty though, when not eating our biddies(that baby chickens) eggs and quails.

    Have a great day.

  4. Our poor duck's first egg got eaten by a snake. I know it's the cycle of life, but I was hoping to get some ducklings!

At our other house, our cat found a nest of baby snakes, and started bringing them in through the cat door. I was glad when that little episode was over...
